Our Maison
We are an unconventional luxury couture house founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and designer and retailer Jenny Meirens. We remain deeply connected to our history and original philosophy. Our ideas are radical yet simple: the four stitches; Bianchetto; upcycling; Replica. We continue to explore new ways of questioning traditional modes of creativity.
Since 1988
Our history spans close to 40 years, during which we have continually re-examined classic definitions of beauty and approaches to garment making. We continue to find new ways to approach fashion whilst extending the integrity and authenticity of our original codes.
Design Philosophy
The silhouette is a field of study. Its conventions can be questioned. To do so, we begin with material and construction. We look to the archive to investigate potential future design. The evolution of garments through wear, use, and history intrigues us. Our techniques form an integral part of our point of view.
Artisanal
In 2006, we created our first Artisanal collection. In 2012, we became an official member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. The term Artisanal is our perspective on Haute Couture, connected to our ethos that centers the handcrafted, one-of-a-kind nature of our couture pieces.
Shows
Our shows have always taken place in unconventional locations and formats. From playgrounds and abandoned metro stations to masked models and performances, we push creativity as a means of expressing our work through our Co-Ed and Artisanal shows in Paris.

MaisonMargiela/Folders is a fresh way to experience the work of the House. Celebrating the ideas, codes and values that define our past and future, internal research of our physical and digital archival materials is shared with the world through a Dropbox link. Selected chapters around four foundational codes from our early years are available to download and explore, with new chapters to come.
